Features of iPhone OS 3.0 are announced

Apple has announced the features of the new iPhone OS today in a Keynote. While the developer version is available, 3.0 will be in customers’ hands in summer.

Here are the new features that the new OS will bring. Some features are API’s which will let developers take advantage of them, such as:

  • Paid applications will be able to offer paid content, which can be purchased within that app
  • Bonjour is available for developers, so other iPhones will be discovered over Wifi and Bluetooth.
  • Push notification is available, meaning that applications (though not running in the front) will be able to notify you of for example incoming messages.
  • Apple will allow developers to develop turn-by-turn GPS navigation.

And some improvements are directly visible to the user:

  • Cut, Copy, Paste is available and works in a similar fashion as we described yesterday. Undo by shaking the iPhone.
  • Landscape keyboard is available in all applications.
  • It is now possible to send and receive MMS picture messages.
  • You can record voice memos, crop them and save them.
  • Spotlight search is available for the whole device, searching application names, contacts, notes, calendar events and mail too. Will be accessed by flickering the home screen to the left.
  • Stereo Bluetooth headsets are supported.
