Have you ever found yourself daydreaming on holding that laser-beam-spreading, jedi-gun-like gadget of cashiers in your hand, trying to scan everything around? The App

Though the app store have had some alternatives for this functionality, a new app called Red Laser, claims to shine out thanks to its improved usability. It’s been developed by a bunch of developers who call themselves Occipital, and believe it or not, it even has a developer API!

So.. What can i actually do something useful with this barcode scanner?

Feel free to abuse this ideas;

  • Scan the thingy, and instantly learn the alternative prices, reviews etc on the internet
  • Found the perfect movie to which is romantic enough to watch with your girlfriend but involves violence and action to make you stand it? Scan the movie at the store, add it to your personal “watchlist”, or.. you know.. don’t do something illegal!
  • Scan the rare-quality-but-hard-to-tell-coffe-brand you worship, add it to your grocery list, and prevent your boyfriend to buy something wrong next time!

A great game for iPhone: ZenBound

zenboundgameimageZen Bound is part of a trend of iPhone applications which aim to relax the user.

It is a very relaxing and engaging game, which is basically about wrapping ropes about objects in such a way to cover them completely.

Something to be enjoyed at a slow pace: a game where a high score is not the goal. Zen Bound is designed to challenge in a subtle way, it does not attack or force the player.

The game provides direct interaction with the objects in the screen thus has almost no learning curve. Produced by Finnish developers, it’s available from the App Store for $4.99.

Gmail updated for Android and iPhone

Google has released a new version of Gmail mobile which works with iPhones and Androids. It is said to be much faster because it makes use of the local storage that the iPhone browser offers. You can also access your emails without a connection. A new feature, “floaty bar” lets you do common actions without having to scroll, being similar to the toolbars of iPhone applications.

Check out for yourself from this video:

Mobile Gmail can be used by firing Safari and going to the address http://www.gmail.com.

AT&T updates and retracts new Terms of Service

Yesterday AT&T released much stricter new terms to its data plan terms of service, namely:

downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device, web broadcasting, and… any applications that tether the device… to Personal Computers or other equipment

which essentially means you can’t provide any computer an internet connection using a phone, moreover, software such as SlingPlayer (redirection of TV), Skype (audio signals) and QIK (web broadcasting) would be disabled as well.

Strangely the next day AT&T retracted these terms, claiming:

The language added on March 30 to AT&T’s wireless data service Terms and Conditions was done in error. It was brought to our attention and we have since removed it. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

So AT&T users can relax for a while and hope they aren’t seriously planning to implement such strict rules to their data plans.

How to use Skype with your iPhone

Skype for iPhone has been released yesterday becoming an instant hit, entering the list of most downloaded apps immediately. The application is free and is available from the App Store.

Skype

We should remind that this version can only make Skype-to-Skype calls with Wi-Fi connections, not over 3G. However it is possible to chat and sign in over 3G/EDGE/GPRS connection.

The reviews for the app reflect the fact that it has bugs and is not working for everybody: 45% of the users have given it 5 stars, and 40% of the users have given it only 1 star. Reported problems are crashing (upon launching Skype, application immediately exists and user returns to springboard) and frequently dropped calls.

32GB iPhone coming in June?

Analyst Daniel Amir from Lazard Capital markets told CNET in an interview that he expects Apple to release a 32GB iPhone next June. Among the 32GB iPhone, a low-end version is also expected for developing countries such as China, Russia, Brazil and India.

Production is anticipated to begin in April and ramp up in May, and the new phones could be announced in June, Daniel Amir, a Lazard Capital Markets analyst, said in his report.

He noted, however, that the low-end version may only be available in the fast-growing, emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, while the high-end version is expected to make its way to North America and Europe.

The low-end version is expected to run on a 3G network, rather than on Wi-Fi, while the high-end version is anticipated to double its storage capacity from 16GB to 32GB of NAND flash memory and feature improvements to its camera, Amir noted in his report, citing checks with Apple’s iPhone channel partners.

Easy way to install Jailbroken Apps

Ripdev has released Installerapp which makes it easier to make use of Jailbroken apps on the iPhone. It was alleged to install those apps without Jailbreaking, but upon inspection we found out that it first Jailbreaks the device before installing the apps.

So it essentially does what QuickPWN did for free for $7. But it does has a manager too to keep track of the Jailbroken apps (just like iTunes would do so for installed apps). Installerapp supports both the Installer and the Cydia repositories.

Seems like the developer community is moving further and further to create a viable solution to Apple’s locked iTunes App Store system.
